(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

My computer and technical problems have finally come to one of the worst possible places. Earlier today, my (brand new) external hard drive stopped being read by any computer. I don't quite know the problem exactly, but this is on top of my already existing computer issues. At the moment, I am currently unable to access my external hard drive's files, which contains not only my scanlation files, but quite a lot of my own personal files. I've contacted both Dell and WD about my issues now, and can do nothing but wait for responses and the like. For the time being though, I am unable to do any scanlation, and have no idea when I'll be able to again.

So naturally I'm pretty upset.

  1. Hate to tell you to void the warranty, but take the external drive case apart, remove the drive and connect it directly to your computer with a sata cable. See if that gives you enough access to get the files off. Also try teracopy or unstoppable copier if it's still giving you trouble getting at the files.

  2. With USB 3.0 external drives I have to connect the power cord BEFORE I connect the USB cable. Not sure why and never had to do this with USB 2.0 externals. Unfortunately if you send the external in under warranty, you will not be able retrieve any of your files as they will be wiped, so Kajidono's solution above may be your only hope. I've had issues with a lot of externals and most of the problems have been the interfaces and for that reason I prefer to buy bare drives and use a HD docking station

    2. MyGica. No name I bought cheaply from Monoprice if I remember correctly.

    3. When I originally started replacing my externals with bare drives, the additional advantage was that bare drives were cheaper since they did not include the interface/case. However lately I am having problems finding cheap bare drives, especially in the 4TB range. It seems the HD manufacturers are now placing their cheapest (Green) drives in externals rather than selling them in bulk OEM packaging. So the only bare drives I can find now in 4TB are either OS or NAS drives and since they have to be far more reliable than Green drives which are only used as backups, they are a lot more expensive. I purchased 10 4TB externals last year at $99 per, mostly to retire the 24 1TB hard drives I have (both external and internal) but haven't been able to find 4TB bare drives at that price point.

    4. Try http://www.goharddrive.com/ These guys deal in overstocks, drives meant for surveilance systems, refurbished, wholesale, overstock, whatever you can think of. They might send you a bad drive, as they can't test every single one, but their customer service is absolutely top notch. They have a one year warranty on every drive they sell and they'll RMA your drive for a more expensive model of the same size, no problem. Quick too. Last drive I had a problem with, I sent them an email at 2AM and they responded within about 10 minutes. They sell on newegg as well.

    5. Ok. Thanks. They don't seem to have any 4TB right now but I'll look at it periodically. I buy most of my drives (both bare and external) from Newegg but not from their website. Periodically, when Newegg has a lot of overstock, they won't list it on their website but they will sell it on ebay - the prices on ebay were substantially lower than their own website.

    1. That'll occasionally happen. The group may not be dead, even though it seems like it.

Life can just 'happen'. Injuries, sickness, vacation, or simply 'LIFE' happens to prevent smooth release of series' which are highly desired. I'm sure they'll be back and releasing your favorite projects soon enough.
