o/

This is going to be a rather long post, which many will not read all of, but I'm typing it up regardless. The whole of the message can be found after the jump.

I'm sure ZeroDC, VIS and many others will deny and combat everything I am about to say, but everything below is what transpired, and I would not have acted like I did without confirming it.

As many are already aware, and for those who are not already aware:

I did indeed delete files off of Village Idiot Scans' MF account and FTP. I had no intention of hiding this. I made it obvious for them on purpose. Most that find this out at first, will just immediately condemn myself and my group. Most will continue to do so, even after finding out my reasoning. Whatever the case may be, I was and am fully prepared for any and all consequences afterwards.

I do not regret my actions. I would do it all over again if given the chance.

However, as much as people may not believe me, I did not delete everything of theirs. I am not the only person who has their MF and FTP information and has something against ZeroDC and/or VIS itself. I've talked with many of these people in my time as a scanlator. The only person I have anything against in VIS is ZeroDC. In fact, there is someone in my own group that does work for VIS, and I've worked with several other VIS members and had a good relationship with them. The only files I removed were series that he himself managed. I even backed said files up, as I plan to do something further with them. VIS works are split under two admins, Zero and Noah, and as I was a member there once, I know which he works on. If there is anything else missing like they seem to be claiming, it was not me who did so.

I have two reasons for doing what I did:

The first reason is not the majority reason, but it needs to be explained first. After joining VIS myself I was warned by quite a few people that ZeroDC is not someone I should work with, and he was generally just a grade-A douche. I was never really given any specific reason as to why, and for some time I ignorantly continued working largely under Zero because I had no problems. This was however, until I first decided to make my own group, and I was looking for someone to translate a series for me, Haruwaka. I asked in VI's staff IRC room if anyone would be willing to translate a series for me. Several people were active in the room at the time, including ZeroDC himself. Nothing was said to me about me asking. About 30 minutes or so later, Purr-Nyan contacted me and told me he would be willing to do so. We moved along through the series, however upon ZeroDC finding out that Purr was doing this for me, be blew up. And I mean, blew up. He treated Purr-Nyan like he owned him, basically saying that people in his group were not going to work on anything he does not agree to. He forced the project to be called a joint between RZK and VIS, and while I have no problems with joints, the way he went about it rubbed me the wrong way.

We continued along without any issues, that was until I was moving around and did not have constant internet access in June. I was unable to do very much work at all, for any of the groups I was a part of because of that. Shortly after getting to my destination, I was able to get a some more stable internet access from the local library. This allowed me to do some more work, but still not as much as I'd like. As I was not assigned to any one series there, to do work I had to ask for it, and I would do so every day. Despite doing so, there was really no work that needed to be done, so I was never given anything. Until I was finally given the script for Kanade chapter 6 to proofread. As at the time, chapter 5 had not been released (and to this day, still hasn't), I did not make it a top priority, but I was working on it, and they knew this. Two days after being given Kanade 6, ZeroDC fired me for being "lazy". While I have little issue with being fired, but those who know me know I am the farthest possible thing from lazy. Anyone who follows this group knows that. For the past several months, I have basically dedicated my life to scanlation. Whenever I've been on a computer, I've been doing work on some series, for some group I work for. What I took issue with was what happened afterwards. Which I was not aware of, until the situation with IMS arose. It was revealed to me inadvertently by georgi, that ZeroDC had been spreading lies about me. He told IMS, and likely other groups he is associated with, that not only was I lazy, but I steal staff from other groups. This by itself, while a complete douche move, is not what made me decide to do anything.

The biggest reason was because of what I found out ZeroDC did with VIS itself. ZeroDC himself, was once simply a mere member of VIS. He was nothing but a typesetter. He knew how to do absolutely nothing else. He is still rather incompetent when it comes to other things. Anyway, last year at some point, the 2 leading admins of the group at the time had been away for about a month. He went to an IRCop for IRC Highway, and told them "I think Satoshi (previous admin) is neglecting the channel, and I want to take over." And at the time, there was nobody around to stop him, so he became the de facto leader. Following that, he covered it up, making it seem like he was meant to be the leader. He pushed off all the work onto others, and basically brainwashed the rest of the members he's the leader of the group and he knows best. After some time, another admin there, elcausa, knowing full well how much of an ass Zero is, simply didn't care and would also cover it up for Zero. Some time after, he even blatantly lied, and said "I was FORCED to become leader by Oren." When people had spoken with Oren (who at this time had quit scanlation), Oren himself did not want Zero to become leader and was against him being such.

So, there you go. It might not seem like much for those who have no dealt with ZeroDC first-hand, but for myself and several others who I have talked to, they were all supportive of what I was doing and why I was doing it.

Also, for those that have seen the image that they've passed around, yes, they did not actually take any projects we were doing, or plan on doing so, but they were however in the process of sniping 2 projects from 2 other groups. Omamori Himari from Vortex, and Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou. There were raws and translations for both series on their FTP. I didn't take a picture of the Monster Musume stuff, but I did however grab pictures of the Omamori stuff.

While like I've said before, I do not regret my decision and I would do it again if given the chance, many will not understand why I did it, and this has resulted in my burning of several bridges. While I absolutely love scanlating, this whole thing will likely result in my disappearance from scanlation slowly over time. As much as I love scanlation, I have spent months of my life doing nothing but, while getting nothing back. I don't quite mind getting nothing back, but it became a job, and while still fun, was becoming less enjoyable than it was when I first joined scanlation in January.

The status of several of our projects is currently up in the air, but people can still expect releases of Sexual Hunter Riot Ch1, Soukai no Eve 10.5, Who Killed Cock Robin Ch5, Sora no Manimani Ch23, Hagure Yuusha Ch2, Oda Nobuna Ch1, Sakurasou Ch3, Seven Sisters Ch4, and several Nogizaka Haruka chapters.

Commence flammatory comments, I suppose?

  3. You did a very selfish thing. You sabotaged other people who had NOTHING to do with any of this. NOTHING. All their hard work and for what? Next time you have a beef with someone you talk it out or walk away. It's always that simple.

    ReplyDelete
  4. But one of VIS's members works on Monster girl with the anons and bunch, so having raws and what not in the FTP wouldn't be abnormal. It's not like it's impossible for people to put personal stuff in an FTP, hell I know people in other groups that puts things that have nothing to do with scanlation in theirs, you're being ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  5. You know his IP, big deal! He can always change it...

It is a pretty selfish act, though. Hope this becomes a lesson for you

  6. Wow what a dick move. Sorry but what you did does not really justify your reasons. To put it simply, after your actions, I am inclined not to believe a word you said.

  7. and you know, the ones who are most greatly affected probably are those who lost their work because of this and didn't have backups, not Zero.
Also, "I even backed said files up, as I plan to do something further with them" <-- is that supposed to mean you INTENDED to use their work without given permission? (like, stealing?)

  8. It would help your claim that you didn't delete everything if Mediafire weren't the ones that identified you.
Stop being a pussy and own up. All you did was throw a temper tantrum because you didn't like someone and mess up the work of a bunch of unrelated people.

    ReplyDelete
  9. You backed up their files, just return it to them...

    No big deal

  10. It's a shame that this happened to a group with such a good purpose. Both what ZeroDC did to you and his people and what you did in return.

  11. Sheessh, I have no time for scanlation dramas... Just forget the shit out of it and carry on.

  12. ^^ Too late now. He's blacklisted. He's already been dropped from two groups.

  13. Yeah, how did you back up files when you claim to be on a public library connection? According to the VIScans people, they had over 30 gigabytes of files in their Mediafire and FTP account.

    Stop lying and man up.

  14. Stupid enough to go back to the crime scene multiple times and get caught, involved innocent people in his personal vendetta against a single member, who was merely mentioned by name by IMS when they had an argument about breaking up a joint with derek, and deny everything and then try to put all the blame on the other guy.

  15. Apparently, library connections are quite fast. But we're talking about 30gb here, so he might stayed there overnight. lol

  16. so does that mean that rzk's translation of Kashiwagi-san is pretty much dead?

  18. Why doesn't anyone notice that he only deleted works that ZeroDC is involved in, not everything else?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Because that is called a lie. Mediafire cited him and only him in deleting everything (not to mention the absolute ridiculousness of someone deciding to delete everything at EXACTLY THE SAME TIME).
If you believe him over Mediafire... well, I think you're a little gullible.

  19. I don't really give a flying fig who did what and why. As long as there are people willing to translate then that's fine with me, I like reading manga full-stop. Don't care who translates, just as long as someone will.

I think it's time for you to grow up....seriously

    ReplyDelete
  28. Now now guys... no need to flaming the guy. Everybody make mistake.

As for you Derek, i think you should be brave and apologize to them. With this incident everybody is starting to hate you, and being hated is not nice. (You won't get any new staff if you're hated btw).

Btw, a wise man once told me:
"A man must be brave to take responsibility for what he did".

You realize how stupid that sounds, right? Accidentally deleting a file or two, that's a mistake. Deleting every single thing a group has, that's a malicious and down right disgusting action.

He's already said he doesn't care and would do it again, and even if he didn't, an apology is worthless - he wouldn't be apologizing because he's sorry.

  29. Wow Derek, just wow. I hate to inform you of this but I have a feeling that you will not be picked up by any groups while you still use the name Derek, or keep the same IP address. if you want to do what ever it is you do you will have to make a whole new name and everything if you havnt already.

  30. LOLOLOLOLOLOLLOLOLOL

Sorry, you are a funny one. I was there too when Oren quit and wanted to force others to pick up the leader role. So those you talked with, could you send them to me? I wanna see if their bullshit fits well with the logs I have after talking with sato, oren and zero. I mean, I 've known them before they made VI.

So you would do it again if you had the chance to, are you a spoiled single child? I suspect so. What you deleted isn't only what VI uses but what the members in VI which are also in other groups use. That FTP wasn't VI only. I've put up some stuff that kono-basho was going to put in that folder.

Anyway, believing you will take some really idiocracy from me and the rest of the people who will read this. You wanna know why? Just tell me what the hell kind of problem you had with nearly all the groups you were in and why are they NOT talking nice about you? I mean sure we can say that VI are some bastards but what anout the rest of the groups? Are they all bastards too?

Let me guess, it's not you there's something wrong with, it's the world?

roflmaocoptor, you are a funny one.

Zero is still nice for not taking this further, if it was me you would be stressing and pulling your hair out the way I would make you cry by hurting each and every group you would try to make. He's just too nice imho.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't care what started the drama between you and Zero. You may have been hurt by him, and that's understandable; it happens from time to time. But the number of people you have hurt by the actions that you took, the people who weren't involved in your little spat in the first place, is much, much greater. Whatever happened between you two should have stayed between you two. Actions have consequences.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Derek, please respect the other staff members and return their work. There's too much collateral damage to make this worth getting back at just one member of the group.

    ReplyDelete
  35. While I agree that ZeroDC acted unfairly towards you, I do not believe that it justifies deleting ANYONE'S work, especially those who are unrelated. You have made yourself look very bad in this instance. I urge you to return the files, as that would repair the damage somewhat.

Regardless of whatever you do in regards to this, I VERY STRONGLY urge you not to quit scanlation suddenly. Leave that whiny bitch move to Prozess.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Guys, you don't get it.
He doesn't have the files. He lied about everything else and fabricated evidence, so why would he tell the truth about that?
He probably has the files of a certain project he was planning on stealing, and maybe some raws or something, but I'm sure he didn't take all the files.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ok Derek first of all I thank your group for translating quite a few manga's I enjoy, but seriously that is one of the most childish things I've ever seen

    ReplyDelete
  38. Heard both sides of the story. Really think it was childish of you to something like delete an entire archive. If you think about it, this is the internet, unless you've met the person in real life, you really have no right to do something like this. Otherwise it'd probably just have been best if you left them. Woulda been punishing enough.

I do understand what you did, and your reasoning behind it, but given a few moments, you really ruined it not for the scanlators, but the fans as well.

In all fairness, many groups have been subject to some form of "dickish" behaviors. All members of the group have their own jobs, even if some are less significance, all jobs are important. You yourself realize this, and any help that any group receives is and should be greatly appreciated. You have to respect this fact, because I'm sure it wasnt because you were lazy that he fired you

It's really nothing to cry about, just move on and translate, because if it's not for yourself, it's for the fans. If it's not for either, then it's for the money you've obviously been hiding from us.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Main point is that you stole or destroyed property that you had no right to.

Next point is that you are not the leader or owner of VIS or the other scanlation groups you said is being effected by alleged sniping so it is not your right to do this anyway and your pics are fake looking causing me to doubt that they have merit.

you are not Batman or a "hero" misguided villain maybe but a villain all the same.

    ReplyDelete

    1. A: There was no sniping :|
B: VIscans doesn't have the rights to that property either, no scanlation group does.

  40. Woah, what a brat you are. I mean, I've read both stories and I realize that there is something going on between you and Zero.

But yeah, deleting stuff of completely unrelated people? I mean, try to put yourself in their shoes. Imagine you wake up one day with a message by a group your doing coop with telling you all the stuff you worked on is just gone. Completely random and unrelated to anything you ever did. Would you still be talking about justice then? I doubt it.

What's more, seeing you fail at spouting your lies cracked me up so hard. I mean, 0 byte files? Like really? Are you completely sure?

Dude, you have a brain, USE IT!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Just to reiterate what the other posters have been saying, this act was utterly childish. While it may have been okay for you to do something that would have no long-term effects, this will probably--no, definitely slow down every release that VIS has in the works. Having this much work taken off for something so petty, that is just plain unreasonable. If you really do have the files, the best thing for you, Zero, VIS, and all of the readers would be to return them, apologize, and continue on your merry way. Though I don't know how well that last part will go, seeing as you seem to be blacklisted in most groups by now, and I doubt people will be joining this group in the near future.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wow, this kind of backfired a bit didn't it.
I seriously don't know what you were thinking when you did this, it's annoying more then anything because you've greatly affected your group, fans and anyone working with VIS...
The evidence you use to back up your statements is laughable 0kb files that were all last edited 2 minutes ago?
Thankfully other groups seem to be keen on continuing Haruka/Haruwaka seeing as you seem to have vanished..
After this I certainly can't trust you anymore so I won't be working for you anymore.

  44. So much drama... If it was me in ur situation I'd just wouldn't bother and just quit on my own accord. The internet is not serious business but it seems that way apparently. hopefully this farce won't change releasing anything from you Derek. 46. Grow up. This is just pitiful, nothing more. I hope you become a one man group, because if it were me, I sure as HELL would not want someone like you as the leader. Be possessive about scanlations, my God, how immature can you be as a person? You forgot the main reason why you scanlate, get out.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This whole trainwreck has confirmed my long-held suspicion that you actually DO have to be stupid enough to want to get into scanlating.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well I used to work with VIScans WAY back last year around October or maybe November or so...

ZeroDC was the one who recruited me, gave me stuff to do, and acted like the leader. I assumed he was the leader (and a good one) and other people on the IRC also I think said that he was an admin...

    ReplyDelete
  49. One: mediafire admins themselves reported ONE IP that deleted *everything*, yet you claim "The only files I removed were series that Zero himself managed. I even backed said files up, as I plan to do something further with them.". So basically, you delete out of petty frustration, and keep them "since I want to get what I want", you do realize this is just threatening people? You're scum, and you probably won't ever admit it. Don't think you'll any reputation left though.
